Trick or Treat With Agents

Hi All,

I'm happy to announce a Halloween themed contest I'm co-hosting with Brenda Drake, and Deanna Romito. Submissions open October 24th at 11EDT and we are taking the first 150 entries that follow the rules correctly at trickortreatwithanagent@gmail.com Then Brenda, Dee, and I will each choose 12 entries to host on our blogs from October 29-31. Costumed agents will drop by those dates for treats aka MS requests.

I'll also have a blog post next week introducing our costumed agents and what they are looking for.

Contest is open to MG,YA, and Adult. (No Erotica or Memoirs)

Be sure to follow us on Twitter for live updates, and of course, our blogs.

  2. This sounds really cool! I'm a new follower, so I'll definitely be swinging by for updates on this and other things. :) Nice to meet you!

P.S. Just in case you didn't know, you're word verification is on. That will make it harder for people to comment, especially come contest time. :) I thought I'd point it out in case you weren't aware.

    1. Thanks! I didn't know that, so I'll take a look. Contest will only be open to agent comments anyway, but thanks for letting me know!

  3. I'm a little confused by question one-is our MC supposed to tell you why they chose to dress up as so-and-so (I'm going as Cookie Monster because I'd stuff cookies down my gullet all day if I could)? Or does it relate to something specific (like, which Grey's Anatomy character do you most relate to)?

    1. I like your Cookie Monster answer, but honestly it doesn't matter the route you go as long as your costume relates to your character in some way. For Example, my MC would dress up as a pilot/astronaut because she's really into flying.

    1. How did I miss that? Go with the Date, NOT the Day. I'll fix ASAP. Contest opens October 24th at 11EDT

  5. This is awesome! I can't wait to hear who the agents are! The fact that three of my favorite authors are doing this just sweetens the cauldron ;-)

  6. This sounds like it could be very, very cool. I definitely like the idea of having the main character answer a question as part of it - that's not the sort of thing you usually see in pitch contests. Nifty. ^_^

  7. Are we allowed to pitch more than one MS? Thanks! This ocntest sounds so fun!

    1. Hi Angi. That's a great question.
We think it's only fair to have one manuscript entry per person because we're only taking 150 entries. I'm sure whichever you pick to send in will be great!

And for those of you reading all the comments, contest RULES will be posted on an upcoming blog post.

  8. I have an odd question...my MS is told from four points of view, so technically I have four main characters. In my pitch sentence, only two will be mentioned, but I was thinking of one of the other ones for the costume bit. Can I only describe the costume of a main character mentioned in the pitch? Stupid question, really. I could answer that myself, but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks for putting this together! It looks like so much fun!

    1. Hi Janet, If the MS is told from one POV more than the other POV's, then I would suggest you use that one. But if all 4 POV's are equally important, you can try to find a way to give all 4 characters a costume and quick explanation in 2 sentences or just stick with one POV. It's completely up to you how you want to work it. Maybe write a few options and then use the strongest answer however that may be...

      Hope that helps!

  9. Hi Kim! I'm a new follower and found your blog through Brenda Drake. This sounds like a totally amazing contest and so creative.

    I love your blog, btw.

Thanks for putting so much thought into such a col idea. Now, I'm off to find the agents who will be participating to see if they have a wish list similar to my manuscripts!
